Crisis of Medium

29 11 2010

Watching the Game of Thrones preview, I had an epiphany (that wasn’t really much of an epiphany at all- more like a slow boiling realization):

Many of the stories I love, enjoy, and want to share/bring life to, etc. really need a film or TV format to tell properly.  Which led me to ask: if I want to do things like “Game of Thrones”…why am I devoting myself to theatre?  Is there a good segue between the two?

Of course there is.  Everything we do is valuable.

Not that dramaturging a play about Robots doing Ibsen isn’t the coolest thing ever—because it basically is—but the chance to dramaturg something like Game of Thrones?

Yeah.  Gonna do that at some point in my life.

Let’s keep the list going:

  • A Devised play based on C.P. Cavafy’s poetry
  • An adaptation of Beowulf
  • Pippin (the musical)
  • “A Mouthful of Birds” by Caryl Churchill
  • “Equivocation” by Bill Cain
  • Bryan Doerries’ translation of “Ajax”

  • An Adaptation of “The Rats in the Walls” by HP Lovecraft (Maybe for next Halloween?)

Up late

20 08 2010

Rounding 4 am, struggling through a couple of nights of Insomnia.  I’ve got an empty house here: roomate and girlfriend are both gone for a month, and I think just the awareness of the emptiness is making me a little restless.  Lord knows I’ve slept in empty apartments before.

Final round of “Hamlettes” auditions tomorrow–maybe that’s keeping me up too.  Will keep ya’ll posted on that.

Saw Eclipse Theatre co’s production of “After the Fall” tonight–fairly titanic piece of theatre.  Despite his claims otherwise, it was fascinating to watch Arthur Miller work through some of his personal demons vis a vis relationships on stage—I was suprised at how many resonated closely (and uncomfortably) with me.

Mostly the fact that dating Marilyn Monroe was a bittersweet and chaotic part of my life.
No, but seriously folks–give it a read, and if you’re in Chicago right now, go see it—two or three more performances this weekend, before they close.

I should give sleep another try.

4: “Mexico” by Cake

5: “zero/one” by Action Camp

It’s such a big bomb

15 07 2010

I realized today that I have lived my whole life under the shadow of the atomic bomb.

By which I mean to say: for older generations, it has not always been a given that a country or organization could destroy the known world.

I wonder if the fact that it has really been ever-present has changed our ability as a generation to deal with enormity and absolute horror it reflects.

Artistic Home

8 06 2010

An interesting phenomenon in Chicago theatre—possibly based on the Steppenwolf model, this town trends towards Ensemble/Company based theatres—groups of very dedicated artists who work together closely and consistantly.  Pittsburgh’s scene (at least when I was last in the city) was nothing like this—maybe this is simply a function of size, though I’m fairly sure LA is nothing like this either.  Maybe the off and off-off broadway scene in NYC is similar.  Chime in if you know.

I guess this is all building up to the fact that I’m starting to crave that kind of artistic home—a place/group/resource base that I can work with consistantly, create an artistic rapport with, and hopefully grow a network around.  The security one had in college of knowing there was always a creative outlet available, and a group of people interested in collaborating with you.  For many directors, it feels like the only way to do this is to create a new theatre company- which, I suppose, is the reason Chicago has 10,000 small ensembles.  Not that this is a bad thing—I’m just not sure it is an efficient use of my time.  I don’t particularly want to spend the next half-decade trying to hammer an organization into # 10,001.

Which, I suppose, means I need to go on the hunt for a group that shares my aesthetic and has room for another young director/dramaturg.  Not as easy as it sounds.  Maybe more difficult than starting from scratch.

I do think it would be worth it, though.  I’m missing that “collective” feeling.

We all have a set, right?  I’m not sure I like the term “Bucket List,” so—a list of things I’d like to direct/adapt/devise.  This will probably be updated occasionally.

Pet Projects:

  • A Devised play based on C.P. Cavafy’s poetry
  • An adaptation of Beowulf
  • Pippin (the musical)
  • “A Mouthful of Birds” by Caryl Churchill
  • “Hamlettes” by Patrick Shaw
  • “Equivocation” by Bill Cain

Just to help me keep them in my sights….

New Blog

28 05 2010

I sometimes feel like I’ve transitioned between so many blogging platforms—tumblr being the most recent.   Tumblr is wonderful for pictures, but I haven’t found it very conducive to longer posts.

So—stay tuned for local theatre recommendations, movie reviews, etc, etc.

Real post later, I promise.
